On Saturday, the massive 6,500 person capacity and famous Hall H at Comic Con was filled with a very eager and curious audience. Many were already hardcore fans of this yet-to-be-released, epic movie (Spring 2012 has been shared to be it’s release time).

Upon the panel’s stage and before it, a small army of real LARPers, most of them who appeared in the movie, sounded the call “Knights of Badassdom are met upon the fields of Evermore! Hip, Hip, Huzzah!” and welcomed onto the stage the movie’s director, Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2), and the super-powered cast of the film, Ryan Kwanten (HBO’s True Blood, RED HILL), Peter Dinklage (HBO’s Game of Thrones, STATION AGENT), Summer Glau (Firefly, SERENITY, The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Danny Pudi (NBC’s Community), and Margarita Levieva (The Lincoln Lawyer, Adventureland).

The incredible new trailer played twice, like wise and powerful bookends upon a Mage’s shelf, sandwiching in-between the marvelous panel where everyone got hear a powerful shout-out to the cast and crew as well as fun behind-the-scenes stories. Charming and amusing dialogue between the cast members and the director revealed their mutual love and respect for each other and the movie they worked on together.

Having worked on the movie to assist with the LARP aspect, Rick McCoy and Adrianne Grady of the LARP Alliance, were mentioned a number of times at the panel by cast and crew alike. “It was such an amazing experience and so wonderful to work with everyone on this production.”, Adrianne says. LARP Weapons from Rick’s company, Iron Liege, were provided for the extras to use. The LARP Alliance contacted LARPers all over the world to get them into the movie as extras and trained the cast in LARP lingo, history, game etiquette, LARP Player Character (PC) development, and safe fighting. “Spokane is a magical place and we were so blessed to be a part of the entire process.”

There’s still more to come! The LARP Alliance is working on a new LARP game that will be a great way for people new to LARP to come into the hobby and have fun. The new game will be out soon so keep checking back on this website or on our Facebook group! There is also a LARP community Gathering planned for October (a bi-annual event the LARP Alliance has been running for years) and other opportunities for people to find LARPs and activities in their area. We expect to see more media (photos, videos, and special event info) as the movie gets closer to its release date and we can’t wait!

THE GATHERING II

We are now beginning planning for the next Gathering in Southern California. Our eventual plan is run twice a year, with one of those being a full-scaled LARP event, similar to a LARP Faire (Cloak and Tavern, for those that remember it from NorCal in 03′).

For this second Gathering of 11‘, we are inviting and encouraging all LARPs in the Southern California area to attend and showcase their LARPs. This will be an opportunity to come out and meet other groups and the local LARP community. We will have an information booth set up so that in case your LARP cannot attend you can get the word out there about your game and events.

We are planning this six months in advance to give time for both LARPs and individuals to prepare. Bring your old garb or gear and sell it at the auction (individuals will be allowed to sell their own items at auction and keep the proceeds), sew up some costumes and set up a vendor booth, or prepare and run a mod to showcase your game.

We will have a more structured schedule, which will be made available a couple of months before the event. Many people loved the Heximeister mod, and the park is suited for many different locations to such events. If you are considering running a mod, send it in. With only a single day to run this, there will be some limits on how many mods may run. First come, first serve. The Fighter’s Guild of the LARP Alliance will provide support in terms of weapons and NPCs to assist in the running of such mods.

We’d like to have a stronger presense representing the different games in the area (like we did in 09′), and would like the normal Battlegames that run each weekend to consider running their event at the Gathering instead.

Food will be provided for free, but donations will keep this going. Anyone wishing to contribute to the food being provided, please contact us. Anyone wishing a change it what we’ve offered for this past event, please send that information our way.

We will be running raffles ($1, $3, $5 – depending on item value), and the auction to additionally support the Gathering. We will have several weapons and other equipment we are donating to this. If you are interested in donating to the raffles,please contact us.
We’d like to see a stronger showing of LARP booths to identify and promote each individual game here in SoCal. We have the five Live Effects Campaigns, Twin Mask, Dying Kingdoms, and another couple of games being planned to run in 2012. With so much LARP saturation, we really need to stand together as a community to support each other.

We’d also like to see more of a Battlegame presence, with Amtgard, Belegarth, and Dagorhir holding their normal weekend events here. Many of the regulars from our Moderate Style practice in the Inland Empire attended the Heavy Combat class taught by Dane Van Petten, and want to do more of it.

If you are new to all this, or LARP in general, this is probably the best way to get information – from the different genres and styles of LARPs that will be attending directly! We hope to get more people completely new to the hobby to attend.
